Dam
Background Info*

Written after I had a little cancer scare. I wrote this during the days while i was waiting for the test results to come back. The whole time i felt like i was drowning…like as soon as i opened my mouth to breath it would be over. This is obviously where the title comes from. As this description might suggest, I was a little panicky. The test results came back as "pre-cancerous". Whew…close one. Anyway, musically this one should also feel urgent. I don’t have anything else to say, except that maybe I need a hug.

Technical Notes

The percussion effect in the bridge was created by reversing the hand clap track performed by Jorgenson, Figg, Montgomery, Manuel and the Casner sisters.

Lyrics

gravity, it tugs on me
my back begins to sway
clouds drift into my eyes
colors slip away
the meat i eat
the light i fight
cut the strands of my life
as the cancer on my skin
slowly creeps deeper in

hold your breath (i press your finger to my lips)
as the dam begins to break
all that's left (i feel it pulse as it slips)
is the air that you take
taste the wind (i breath harder, it starts to fall)
like wine on your tongue
take it in (now i don't feel anything at all)
hold it sacred in your lungs

the masses move in lines
like lemmings to the sea
guided by the cruel thread
of some unseen geometry
as the buildings quickly fall
don't forget to recall
that these muscles and this bone
are like the girders and the stone
