Background Info*
In many ways an extension of ‘Tincture’, it will be positioned immediately after it on the record. They were written at about the same time. Builds on the theme that everyone has something to sell to fix what ails you, but it’s never free. Accepting help always has ramifications and you often end up enslaved to whoever or whatever it was that seemed to save you. A straight 1, 4, 5 blues song, I’m a little worried that its going to come off as out of place stylistically. We’ll see how it goes, but I like how it complements ‘Tincture’, and the stylistic schizophrenia I’m hoping we achieve when its finished is part of the point: trying out different musical styles throughout the record is supposed to feel like looking for answers (tough to say whether that will actually come off in the end).
Technical Notes
O'toole’s slide guitar playing is a single continuous take on an Epiphone Dot 335 through the Orange 'Tiny Terror' amplifier.
Lyrics
oh, hold on tighter
it all slips through my hands
the hourglass is running short on sand
i've been told
that fate is sold
and rented every day
it would seem
to live your dream
someone must get paid
and i've nothing to trade
foolhardy
never level-headed
crashing in
where angels fear to tread
now there are devils
sleeping in my bed
tie me to the bedpost
this isn't love play
stick me with a pitchfork
i'm done
we'll do it again tomorrow
this has sure been fun
take this little pill
chase away the chill
it's all right
say goodnight
take this little pill
for a little thrill
it's all right
to stay up tonight
